eBay Authenticity Guarantee: Every Threshold, and What It Does to Your Sale
If your listing qualifies for Authenticity Guarantee, eBay enrols it automatically. In eBay's own words, there is no opt in or opt out option. The service is free of charge to the seller, and it changes where you ship, how long delivery takes, and whether the sale can be undone by something other than the buyer.
Qualification is a price threshold, and the threshold is different in every category. Six categories, six different numbers, and most guides quote one or two of them. Since these are all high-value listings, it is worth knowing what eBay takes at those price points before you set a price near a threshold.

The six categories and their thresholds
Authenticity Guarantee currently covers watches, sneakers and shoes, apparel, handbags and other luxury accessories, trading cards, and jewelry. Each has its own entry price.

Sneakers carry by far the lowest bar, and eBay notes that select in-demand models may be eligible at a lower threshold still. A $100 pair of sneakers goes through the same authentication pipeline as a $2,000 watch.
The threshold also survives a lower final price. For shoes, handbags and jewelry, eBay states the Buy It Now price is what counts. If it sits at or above the threshold, the item stays eligible even when it sells for a lower best offer or auction price. You cannot drop out by accepting a lower offer.
Watches work the opposite way in auctions: eBay states that if a watch sells for under $2,000 in an auction listing, it may not be eligible for authentication.
Category rules narrow things further. Watches must be in Wristwatches or Pocket Watches, and smart watches, watch parts and accessories are excluded. Sneakers must be in the men's or women's athletic shoe categories or the kids categories. Trading cards must be one of three singles categories, and graded cards are accepted only from Beckett, PSA, Certified Collectibles Group and SGC. Jewelry must contain a fine metal, meaning sterling silver at 925 or above, gold at 10K or above, palladium at 500 or above, or platinum at 850 or above.
Customisation disqualifies. A watch counts as customised if original brand parts have been replaced with non-brand parts or components have been modified, such as adding a diamond to a bezel. A sneaker counts as customised if it has been modified from its original state, including personalised elements or custom artwork.

What happens after the sale
The normal flow stops. Instead of shipping to the buyer, you ship to the authenticator's address that eBay provides.
Inspection is generally processed within 2 business days of the authenticator receiving the item. The authenticator first confirms the item is consistent with your listing title, description and images, then performs the physical authentication inspection.
If it passes, the item ships to the buyer with 2-day secure delivery, or 4-day secure delivery for trading cards. If it does not, the item is not sent to the buyer, the buyer gets their money back, and eBay states you will cooperate in removing the item from marketplace circulation.
Two operational details matter for sellers. Signature confirmation is required for all items sold for $750 or more when shipped from seller to authenticator. And eBay currently carries a live warning on its own page that due to unprecedented market demand, some Authenticity Guarantee orders may be delayed for 7 days or more.
For sneakers specifically, eBay sends the seller a pre-paid FedEx shipping label so the leg to the authenticator costs the seller nothing. US buyers pay a flat $14.95 eBay shipping fee on qualifying sneakers, rising to $30 for buyers in Canada, $45 in Australia, and £8.95 on UK transactions.
The condition trap
This is the clause that costs sellers money and almost nobody writes about it.
Authentication does not only test whether an item is real. eBay states that if the authenticator determines your item's condition does not match the item condition you provided in the listing, the buyer is refunded and the item is returned to you.
A genuine item can fail. Not because it is fake, but because you selected New when the authenticator sees wear, or because the description understated a flaw. The sale unwinds and the item comes back.
This is the strongest practical argument for using eBay's condition field precisely rather than leaning on description text or informal shorthand, which is a habit we take apart in what the condition field actually enforces. Returns follow the same logic. When a buyer returns an authenticated item, it goes back to the authenticators first. They check that it is still in the same condition and has all relevant accessories, including any original manufacturer tags that were on it when sent. Only after that re-check does it return to you and the buyer's refund process.
What the paid tiers actually are
Three categories offer a paid option below the mandatory threshold, and the money direction gets reported wrongly.
Buyers pay these, not sellers. eBay states buyers have the option to purchase Authenticity Guarantee services at checkout. Watches between $500 and $1,999.99 cost $80 plus applicable taxes. Handbags, wallets and select accessories between $200 and $499.99 cost $40 plus taxes, as does jewelry in the same band.
For a seller, this means an item priced just under a mandatory threshold can still end up in the authentication pipeline if the buyer chooses to pay for it. Pricing below a threshold does not reliably keep you out of the process.
Where it is not available
Geography restricts the program more tightly than the category rules suggest.
Watches must be sold on eBay.com by a seller located in the US, or an eligible seller based in Japan, to a buyer in the continental US. Jewelry must be sold by a seller in the continental US to a buyer in the continental US, with selected sellers in India and Japan also eligible except for loose diamonds and diamond jewelry. Trading cards must be sold by a seller in the continental US or Canada to a buyer in the continental US. When US buyers purchase from a Canadian seller, authentication is currently available for raw trading cards only.
Sneakers are the exception with a wider reach: US sellers can ship to buyers in the US including Puerto Rico, and to Canada or Australia if the listing is final sale. eBay states authenticated sneakers cannot be shipped to any other locations, including unincorporated territories and US Armed Forces bases.

Corrections to what is being published
Three claims circulate in guides on this topic that eBay's own page does not support.
The sneaker threshold is widely quoted as roughly $75. eBay's page states sneakers priced from $100 are eligible, with select in-demand models possibly qualifying lower.
The $750 signature requirement is often described as a signature on delivery to the buyer. eBay's page places it on the seller-to-authenticator leg, which is a different shipment with a different party responsible.
The paid tiers are sometimes described as a seller cost. eBay's page places the purchase at checkout, with the buyer.
If you are relying on a threshold to make a pricing decision, check the category page rather than a summary. eBay states new brands and models are continually added.
Conclusion
Authenticity Guarantee is not a service you choose. It is a condition of listing certain items above certain prices.
